DTAN Project

Current Project Activities

DTAN is currently working on the following activities set out below and if you are interested in any particular area, please be free to contact, please contact the DTAN Project Officer by email.

DTAN Reference Group meetings

The DTAN Reference Group meets twice throughout the funding year to monitor the work DTAN does and to discuss various topics ranging from lobbying strategies through to particular activities/events.

Regular article in Deaf Australia Outlook

Each month in the Deaf Australia Outlook, where possible we include articles on work completed by the DTAN Project also with other relevant information that are of interest to our readers.

Position Papers

During this funding year, we are producing two position papers from the discussion papers prepared by DTAN over the last few years. The first one will focus on ‘What is Deaf equivalent to Voice Telephony?’ due end January 2007 and the second on ‘Emergency Services & Deaf People’ due by end May 2007.

Videophones / Video Relay Service

DTAN is researching the availability of videophones that are suitable for Deaf people to use and the technologies they operate on, for example: regular telephone land-line or V2oIP (Video over Internet Protocol). The Deaf community has indicated that they want a Video Relay Service to be available in Australia sooner than later so not until one is established, DTAN continues to lobby for one!

Emergency Services via mobile phones

Mobile phones currently do not provide adequate access for Deaf people to emergency services in Australia. DTAN is investigating ways to make this possible.

Pricing plans for broadband internet and mobile phones

We are currently looking at costing comparisions between:

  1. Standard broadband plans vs suitable broadband plans for video telephony
  2. Standard voice plans for mobiles vs video plans for 3G video phones

This is an area where we need to find out if the cost of telecommunications are greater for people who are Deaf, who happen to need the use of technologies that give us closer equivalent to a voice service (be it mobiles or broadband plans
