"The main natter I receive from the well wishers, was that I am the first South Australian to receive this prestigious award since its inception in 1991 to honour and in memory of Dorothy Shaw.

Though I have never met Dorothy personally I feel that we, in the Deaf Community, should feel proud that we all can contribute one kind or another to enrich the lives of ALL Deaf people. I encourage you all to continue your community contributions however big or small!"

"Winning the award made me feel good personally, because it meant that the hard work and support from my family and friends has been recognised. To my deaf role models, who have contributed so much in their own way for the benefit of the deaf community and the society at large, I dedicate my award to them as well!"

"I felt shocked and pleased to win the Award and be recognised for the work I have done for the Deaf community. I was also proud to be the second family member to get this Award!"

"When Colin gave me the award, I was so speechless. It was a great honour for me to accept that award because I have been involved in the Deaf community for so many years. The award was not only for me and I wanted to share with my husband Barry, my children Fiona & Andrew and the people around me who have supported me. Without their support, I would not have got the award."

"It was a pleasure to receive the Award especially with being at the Farewell Party for XIII World Congress of the World Federation of the Deaf in Brisbane. I remember my surprise when receiving this Award and thinking that it was not just for me but it was something to share with my team who worked hard together to achieve important goals for all Deaf Australians."

"Dorothy Shaw was an important person in my life, encouraging me to get involved in Deaf community organisations. I worked with her in Concerned Deaf Group and Deaf Australia. I learnt a lot from her. I felt deeply honoured to win this award. It made me feel that perhaps I was on the right track with what I was trying to do in the community."

1993
Breda Carty

"It was a great honour to win this Award, because Dot Shaw had been a wonderful mentor for my generation of Deaf women. But I didn’t really feel ready to receive it, because there were so many more things I wanted to achieve with the Deaf community in Australia."
