Accessibility

This website has been carefully redesigned to ensure that you enjoy an interactive experience while navigating around this site as well as making sure this site is accessible as much as possible to a diversity of our users.

During the early design phase, careful and thorough consideration has been taken into account by incorporating useful accessibility features that the current technologies can provide.

This page is focused on explaining how you can attempt to maximise the use of this site’s accessibility features.

Access keys

Access keys are intended to help users, who prefer to use keyboard shortcuts, to jump to a specific page quickly anywhere by pressing a combination of Alt or equivalent and another key that has been pre-defined for you. You can identify them by their small underline to indicate functionality.

Access keys are as follows:
  • Access Keysm - Home page
  • p - Profile
  • i - Information
  • a - Advocacy
  • u - Community
  • c - Contact Deaf Australia
  • b - Accessibility
  • m - Site map
  • s - Search
  • f - Forums
  • o - Privacy Policy

Depending on your operating system, you will need to press different key combinations.

Mozilla Firefox and Netscape Navigator on Windows
Press the Alt key and an access key simultaneously.
Safari (Apple Macintosh)
Press the Ctrl key (not COMMAND) followed by an access key.
Internet Explorer on Windows
Press the Alt key followed by an access key and then press Enter.

Be aware, some older browsers, especially Internet Explorer 4 and Netscape Navigator 4, do not support access keys.

Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumb trails can be seen on the top of any page. They allow you to keep track on where you go and also help you return to the home page quickly. Use them to augment your navigability.

Splash Banner

Simply click on the Deaf Australia logo at the top of any page will return you directly to the home page.

Style Switcher

The style switcher enables users to increase font size to improve readability, using stylesheets. This may be useful for visually impaired users.

This site has 3 switchers: normal (default), medium and large.

Simply click on one of the three blue "T" icons on the top of any page and it will refresh the page instantly according to your selection. Note, although some browsers do not support stylesheets, all content will still be readable.

Section Links

Each page includes a "section links" box in the left sidebar. This provides an alternative way to go to your intended page other than using the drop down menu system. Both drop down menu and section links box have the same corresponding links that are branched out from one of the 6 main groups: Profile, Information, Advocacy, Community, Research and Contact Deaf Australia.

This redundancy allows you to jump to your desired page more quickly by choice.

Visual design

The design of this site includes a number of elements to ensure accessibility.

Alternative text or title
All images in this site have an alternative text (ALT or TITLE) attribute that describes the meaning of the image.
This will pop up a small window "tool tip" in certain browsers when the mouse pointer is moved over the image. For any text only browsers, where images are turned off, this description will appear to indicate the image’s meaning or function.
Colour management
We have attempted to ensure there is maximum contrast between foreground and background elements to enhance your browsing pleasure.
Hyperlink management
Active hyperlinks always appear blue to indicate readiness.

JavaScript

To take an advantage of all features available in this site, you should enable JavaScript in your web browser. These features include the drop down menu interface and the style switcher that utilise Javascript to provide maximum navigability and functionality.

Design and Development

This site is designed to comply with web standards that have been developed by the World Wide Web Consortium. This site has been correctly validated to follow the specifications of XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS2 technologies.

Complying with web standards enables this web site to provide better accessibility among our users. To maximise the use of this site, your browser should be the recent or modern version that supports web standards.

We strongly recommended Mozilla Firework and Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0 or better. For Apple Macintosh users, Safari RSS is highly preferable. For optimal viewing, you should set your screen resolution to 800x600 or higher.
