ACE gives generous donation to SignPost

Media Release - 19 June 2006

Australian Communication Exchange (ACE) has given a generous donation to Deaf Australia to enable the ongoing production of the SignPost television program.

SignPost is produced by Deaf Australia's National Deaf TV Sub-committee, which is a team of dedicated Deaf and hearing people who volunteer their time and expertise to Deaf Australia. The first episode of SignPost was broadcast on TV Sydney (TVS - a community TV channel) in April 2006, and a second episode was broadcast in May.

Until now, the team has been fortunate enough to be able to borrow filming and editing equipment to produce the program. Now, with sponsorship from ACE, the SignPost team has its own equipment.

"This equipment will make a huge difference to the SignPost team's ability to produce programs and to train more Deaf people in film production. It is a tremendously generous gesture by ACE, and a very exciting addition to Deaf Australia's capabilities," said Deaf Australia President Kyle Miers.

Deaf Australia wishes to thank the Australian Communication Exchange for this generous donation. We look forward to continuing to work with them for the benefit of people who are Deaf, and also people who are hard of hearing or have a speech impairment.

SignPost is scheduled to be broadcast every two months on TVS. Unfortunately at this stage it is only accessible to viewers in Sydney. Deaf Australia is investigating ways to make it available to people in other States. We will also be using SignPost programs in our on-going efforts to advocate for a regular Deaf TV program on free-to-air television (ie SBS or ABC).
