Media ArticleDeaf Australia releases position paper on interpreting servicesMedia Release - 23rd November 2007Deaf Australia has today released a position paper on the Deaf community’s views on the supply and demand for Auslan interpreting services. The position paper is based on an extensive study undertaken earlier this year that sought to find out about Deaf people’s experiences of interpreting services, and what they think about these services. A discussion paper and questionnaire were sent to members and put onto the Deaf Australia website, and community consultation workshops to explain the discussion paper and the questionnaire were held in capital cities and many regional centres. Deaf Australia received 367 completed questionnaires. Data from these questionnaires has been analysed and a position paper based on this data has been prepared and approved by the Deaf Australia Board. "This is a very important position paper. Interpreting services are vital for Deaf people and service providers and interpreters themselves need to know about the Deaf experience and views of these services," said Deaf Australia President Kyle Miers. The position paper includes an extensive list of recommendations for changes and improvements to interpreting services. "Deaf Australia is committed to working with interpreter organisations and agencies to improve services, and we hope that all involved will take these recommendations on board and work with Deaf Australia in a spirit of providing the best possible service for Deaf people who use interpreting services," Miers said.
