Government reviews captioning provision

Media Release - 1st May 2008
Deaf Australia is delighted with the release of a discussion paper yesterday by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy. The discussion paper is part of an investigation into the accessibility of electronic media for people with a hearing or vision impairment.

For Deaf people, this means captioning is finally being investigated by the government. This is wonderful news for Deaf people. ‘Access to information in the media is important to everyone, including Deaf and hard of hearing people’ said President Kyle Miers.

Deaf Australia has been working for many years to try to persuade industry to improve the level and quality of captioning on television, in cinemas, on DVDs and on the Internet. So we are delighted to see that the government is taking action by investigating this situation.

Deaf Australia will be making a submission in response to the discussion paper, and we urge others to do the same. This is our opportunity to try to make a real long-term improvement to access to the media for our members and for others in the Deaf community and for hard of hearing people.

The discussion paper and information about how to make a submission can be found at www.dbcde.gov.au
