Deaf Australia welcomes Australia's ratification of UN Disabilities Convention

Joint Media Release - 18 July 2008
Deaf Australia is delighted with today’s announcement that the Australian Government has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities.

"We are thrilled with our Government's commitment to the Convention and we congratulate them on taking positive action in furthering the rights of Deaf Australians," Deaf Australia President Kyle Miers said.

Ratification means that Australia is the 30th country to ratify the Convention, and one of the first Western countries to do so. It also means that Australia will be entitled to participate in the election of the Committee on the Rights of People with Disabilities. This Committee will oversee the implementation of the Convention.
