Deaf Australia to provide Auslan classes for Queensland schools

Joint Media Release - 6 November 2008
Deaf Australia is pleased to announce that an agreement has been signed with the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA) appointing Deaf Australia Inc. to provide Auslan classes for Queensland school communities.

This initiative is part of DETA’s transition from signed English to Auslan in primary and secondary schools statewide.

A key priority for Deaf Australia’s Auslan classes will be quality.

"We are absolutely committed to providing the best possible quality Auslan classes for Queensland school communities," Deaf Australia Executive Officer Karen Lloyd said.

Dr Donovan Cresdee, who is highly qualified and experienced in the development of Auslan courses and the teaching of Auslan, will move to Brisbane to work with Deaf Australia on this exciting and important project. Donovan will be responsible for developing the course materials and providing ongoing training and support for tutors of Auslan. Other key staff will be appointed and there will be opportunities for tutors of Auslan to work with Deaf Australia and to receive on-going training and support to enable them to provide consistent high quality Auslan classes for school communities.

"I am very excited to be working with Deaf Australia on this important initiative and I am looking forward to working with Queensland colleagues," Dr Cresdee said.

The first classes will begin in Term 1, 2009.
