Ordinary members

An Ordinary member is a person (or organisation) who is Deaf. Only Ordinary members are entitled to vote on Deaf Australia business. This rule in our Constitution ensures that Deaf Australia is a true consumer organisation, fully controlled by Deaf people.

Associate members

An Associate member is a person (or organisation) who is not Deaf. Deaf Australia welcomes the support and interest of people who are not Deaf. Associate members receive the same benefits as Ordinary members, except for voting rights.

Individuals and organisations can become members of Deaf Australia.

Individual Members

When you join Deaf Australia as an individual member you also automatically become a member of the Association or Council of the Deaf in your state. If you are a new member, your application for membership will be referred to your state Association or Council of the Deaf for their approval of your membership. Deaf Australia will send your membership details and a share of your membership fee to your state Association or Council of the Deaf.

You will receive membership benefits from both Deaf Australia and your state Association or Council of the Deaf.

Membership is open to everyone at any age. Juniors (aged 0-18), full-time students and pensioners are entitled to a discount membership rate. Couples membership is also available at a discount rate for married or de-facto couples.

Membership is due by 30th June each year, for the following 12 months, ie 1st July – 30th June. If you wish to vote at the Annual General Meeting, usually held in November, you must pay your membership fees by the 30th June before the AGM.
